Abstract

Rapid technological advancement within the global automotive industry has introduced sophisticated computer-based diagnostic systems that require technicians to possess advanced digital troubleshooting skills. However, technical training institutions in many developing countries continue to rely on conventional mechanical training systems, resulting in a skills mismatch between graduates and modern automotive industry requirements. This study examined the influence of smart diagnostic technologies on technical skill development among students in automobile technology education in Nigerian polytechnics. The study adopted a descriptive survey and experimental training design involving 142 automobile technology students and instructors selected through purposive sampling from three polytechnics. Data were collected using practical skill competency tests, technology adoption questionnaires, and workshop performance assessment scales with reliability coefficients ranging from 0.83 to 0.89. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression modelling. The results revealed a significant positive relationship between the use of smart diagnostic technologies and students’ technical skill development (r = 0.73, p < 0.01). Regression results further indicated that diagnostic scanner training significantly predicts technical skill proficiency (β = 0.41, p = 0.003), while simulation-based automotive training tools also contribute significantly to practical skill acquisition (β = 0.37, p = 0.006), explaining approximately 69% of the variation in technical skill development (R² = 0.69). The study recommends the modernization of automobile technology laboratories through the integration of digital diagnostic scanners, automotive simulation software, and intelligent maintenance technologies. The study concludes that technology-driven training systems significantly enhance the technical competencies and industry readiness of automobile technology students.
